Barbara Hulanicki

Barbara Hulanicki wall paper design

I have always been passionate about fashion and design. Growing up in the 1960′s my fashion sense was inspired by people who have since gone on to become iconic figures in the design world.

A great example of this is Barbara Hulanicki, who began her career in fashion in the early 1960′s working as a freelance fashion illustrator.

Barbara is known for adding her trademark sensibilities to fashion, textile and design. She is notable for having developed the now iconic BIBA brand (more on that at a later date) as well as her skills in interior design – being an integral component in the revival of Miami’s South Beach.

Her work has recently penetrated popular culture outposts such as TopShop, Target, Habitat. A fav of mine- Graham & Brown carries her line of wallpapers.

A woman I truly admire that seemingly gets better with age.

Love LV

Louis Vuitton has fashioned its legend of travel adventure by creating luggage, bags and accessories that are as elegant as they are innovative.

The iPad is an icon representing the latest in communication technology and having it wrapped in an iconic brand that has its origins at the start of the last century is an interesting juxtaposition.

I use my iPad all the time, from sending and receiving emails to making portfolio presentations to my clients.

A Louis Vuitton iPad case monogrammed with my initials would make me a very happy girl on Christmas Eve (my birthday) or sitting under the tree on Christmas morning.

ABChairs

I love items that are text or font related. I think the graphic quality of these chairs would look great in a modern kids room.

Dutch designer Roeland Otten made these concept pieces with kids in mind‚ a way to fundamentally integrate literacy into the physical furniture, a sort of subliminal and supplemental curriculum.

ABChairs is a series of 26 typographic chairs. It’s an alphabet to sit on and a series of chairs to form words with. The prototypes are made from lacquered MDF. At the moment, these pieces are manufactured (upon request) in limited editions.

Words Take Flight

David Stark - a whimsical holiday collection that is made from natural and recycled materials.

David Stark is a celebrated party planner who orchestrates glamorous galas for high wattage celebrities, corporations and not-for-profit charities.

I have always admired David’s talent for taking humble materials like cardboard and paper and repurposing them as witty and wonderful objects. He has created a whimsical holiday collection for West Elm that are made from natural and recycled materials.

I love decoupage and the graphic element of words taking flight makes this bird a tactile and whimsical pleasure that has uses beyond the holiday season.

I used this piece to add a bit of whimsy to a client’s coffee table.

Pages Past & Present

A quote to live by.

The origins of these words date back to World War II, when everyone in Great Britain, including my parents, were living under the daily threat of air raids and spending hours in bomb shelters.

Keep Calm and Carry On was a poster produced by the British governments Ministry of Information in 1939 during the beginning of World War II, intended to raise the morale of the British public under the threat of impending invasion.

An interesting fact is that it was little known and never used. The poster was rediscovered in 2000 and has been re-issued by a number of private sector companies, and used as the decorative theme for a range of other products.

I don’t always stay calm, but I always carry on.

I love my iphone, ipad and imac but they can’t replace the tactile feel of writing on good quality paper. Long before these tools became a part of my life and when I first lived away from my home, I always looked forward to receiving hand written letters from my family and friends. Perhaps this is where my love of paper comes from.

Moleskin journals are classic, but I wanted something classic with a twist. I always carry this with me to record client information.

A perfect blend of vintage and new.
